Background.
With advancements in cashless donation technology and aims to get the best outcomes for charities, volunteers and donors. Shout saw the need to improve on their mobile donation product range.
New payment devices that could cater to the varying needs of charities needed an accompanying app that matched the capabilities. My role was to lead the design from research to delivery.
Approach.
Early research included customer interviews with charities and donors. From our leanings we built user scenarios for both charities and donors at typical fundraising events. We then created prototypes and went into another round of customer research to validate if our designs were meeting customer and business needs. After successfully validating our designs we created high fidelity designs and performed usability testing.
Onboarding.
Structuring a seamless onboarding flow was made difficult by strict security measures. Working closely with the development team, we were able to overcome these issues by performing processing tasks in the background. This enabled us to only display priority form inputs and implement SMS verification.
Donations.
The donation screens were designed to be as simple and functional as possible. Hierarchy was the biggest priority, avoiding excessive labelling by placing lesser used features behind simple action buttons.
Outcome.
After working closely with apple, we were excited to release the first App of its kind allowed on the App Store. Due to COVID-19 lockdowns and the cancelation of in-person events, we had to wait a while before we could really measure the success of the release.
We have received positive feedback from charities and since enhanced the app to take payments for auctions and ticketing events. We were pleased to see that volunteer weariness of using their own smartphones to take donations was overcome by a simple and usable user experience.
